An Indian-Panamanian, Arab-Panamanian and Jewish-Panamanian walk into a waterfall...
PENONOME, PA – Alan, Nathanel and I embarked on a 3-hour journey to search for a glorified puddle of water, as our friend Itzik described the Las Pailas waterfalls. On the way there, we stopped by the Panamanian staple Queso’s Chela to pick up their world-famous cheese empanadas for the reasonable price of $1.50 each. After which, we took a wrong turn that set us back 15 minutes and shortened the lifespan of Alan’s car by 2 years at the very least. But like my wise Cambodian friend always preaches, “a setback is a setup for a comeback.” And come back indeed we did. The waterfalls were as far as you can possibly get from a let-down. I’ve had the privilege of starwatching in Tahoe and strolling the golden beaches of Cabo San Lucas. Nothing comes close to this.
I lied. The Muir Beach viewpoint – about a 30-minute drive from San Francisco – does come very close to this. Had I not been born in Panama, I might even admit that it surpasses the Las Pailas waterfalls. The Muir Beach viewpoint is the place that made me fall in love with photography, because it is where I captured my first good photo. However, I quickly learned that the photo being good had everything to do with Muir Beach and nothing to do with me. Muir Beach is also where I discovered that I do in fact have a dream dog. His name is Massimo and his owner’s name is Dante. Massimo is a stoic German Shephard mix who you can count on for everything, from lifting your spirits to fighting off a coyote. Enough of living in the distant past, let us focus on the more recent past.
Las Pailas was amazing. What I also discovered at Las Pailas is that the crocs remain at the pinnacle of footwear, in terms of utility. I felt extremely confident stepping on some of the most slippery, moss-covered rocks I have ever come across. All thanks to the 2015 navy blue crocs that have found shelter in my father’s closet and my closet depending on the time of year. In that moment, I made the decision that my next investment would be more crocs, to be purchased on Black Friday. Las Pailas was also a wakeup call. Waterfalls just like this one can be found across Panama, as well as valleys, mountains, volcanoes, beaches, among others. Yet, for the last year and a half, I have been consumed by the act of generating long-term, sustained impact. I say that ironically but also unironically. From this day forward, I make a promise to myself – that every month I will visit a new “nature spot” and write a proper review as long as the photograph I capture is worth sharing with you.
On the drive back to the city, we discovered another treasure – an outlet on the outskirts of Panama City. For the reasonable price of $15, I bought a sleeveless Nike Tank Top that I would have felt guilty of wearing back in 2015 due to my undying loyalty to Novak Djokovic.
